Day 7 - Tumpat, Kelantan, Malaysia

Char Bihun to start Day 2 in Kelantan! Yee Pin's mum prepared food for our breakfast.

Somewhere near Pasir Puteh Terminal we found Tok Janggut Memorial. Vincent took a few photos and the bus to Kota Bharu reached. We tooked a bus to Kota Bharu and transit to Tumpat, the place where lots of Thai's temple are built. From the journey to Kota Bharu, we discovered paddy with extremely watered field. Vincent said they are lazy, I have no idea.

Tumpat bus was finally there. We talked to the driver and get information regarding Siam Wat. The bus driver asked us to take another bus because it will be faster and easier. Vincent said this is funny because in Penang, no driver would suggest you to take another bus. Cool bus driver. We took bus no 43 instead of no 27 and dropped at somewhere called Kampung Dalam. Vincent have no idea how to communicate with Kelantanese because of the slang of the native language. I was the real-time translator.

Approaching the entrance of Wat Maisuwankhiri, we sensed enemy. DOGS! A lot of dogs run from their own house and stop at certain distance, staring and barking at us. We were stunned. Vincent and I are paralyzed. Vincent asked me for the next step. I keep silent. We are both brain-blanked at that moment. We want to move forward but at the same time thinking of our safety. After a while when the situation is 'under control', we move step by step slowly pass by the loyal dogs. Even though some of them followed us at our back but we remain steady and keep walking. It was very terrifying when around 5++ dogs barking at the same time. Vincent and I dare not to look back. The dogs stop following. GOD BLESSED US!

We then looked for washroom. The first FOC public toilet in Kelantan with 4 stars environment. Only available at temple.

A glance around the wat 360 degree, I can see dragon boat.

This is a temple designed with dragon boat. Hindu plus Buddha culture.

Take a closer look to the dragon boat, I saw fish in the water. Literally like hundreds of the carp. They are so hungry that whenever I stand near the pool, they follow. When I snap my finger, they circulated around my finger in the water.

We went into the dragon boat, a building or a structure that people pray inside. A dragon-boat-like pray house.

Went in and we can see comics, 1 metre squared area per piece, hanging on the spot where ceiling and wall meets, with an angle to create a triangle from the wall and the ceiling as adjacent and opposite sides. Still, we have to lift our head and neck to read and analyze the content. We were trying to understand the story but we couldn't because the material is written in Thai.

We then walk around in the wat and I noticed that there are a lot of animal statues like snake, dragon, tiger, lion, elephant and monkey.

There is a small cave for praying too. Vincent and I went inside and pray.

We then found Buddhist temple, 100% Buddhist style in this Siam Wat. I felt wonderful after seeing the diversity of cultures.

We also noticed that there are a lot of three-headed statues like the ones we saw in White Hindu Temple at Alor Setar.

After a few hours of exploring and feeling, we decided to take our lunch in the cafeteria in the temple.

Vincent and I shared a plate of fried rice and another plate of Char Hor Fan. Not bad. We even chatted a bit with the aunty (the chef and owner herself). She told us that she had a daughter graduated from USM too. After lunch, we left for another Siam Wat.

We passed a railway and Vincent want to take photos. I asked him to lie on the rocks while I captured him with the railway. He did it. It was hot, both the weather and the floor.Really sohai but fun XD

After a long walk we then meet more dogs around kampung house. The dogs barked louder than the ones at previous wat. Vincent tio-cheh-kia at the first bark and pull my shoulders with his hand. I thought he want to run backwards so I prepared to accelerate at that particular moment. But then he stopped me. I was like WTF, are we going to run or not? He then said the dog would be chasing us aggressively if we speed up. So we stand at ground, remained static. I take out knife from my right pocket and I passed to Vincent, asked him whether he want or not. He shook his head. The dogs might attack us if we show our motives. And. So. We. Wait. They left us to their own house and we proceed forward.

We left with faster pace until we reach a hut as our pit stop. Hahahaha. We laugh nonstop for this dumb but funny dog encounters. Really stupid and dumb.

The weather is so hot so we decided to rest a while. We sing along the route.

Lumber mill is smoking, I think they are applying sulphur powder to the lumber. No idea unsure emoticon

We reached another Wat after around 2 km. We nodded and smiled to monks when we entered the Wat and they responded to our greeting. Vincent was looking for Standing Buddha and unfortunately this one is not the Wat with the statue.

We found ourselves a big shade with bench and got some rest with water. I get a long nap under this environment. 30 minutes passed, I went to washroom and we left for another Wat with Standing Buddha.

Within walking distance, we reached the legendary Wat Philkulthong. Vincent was joking about the Chinese words pi gu dong. Speechless.

I found the mighty Standing Buddha. I feel so small standing in front of this golden statue and became speechless for a moment.

What makes the Buddha so great and what differs us from the Buddha? Are they saint and understand everything in life or what? I just don't get it. Looking at this wonderful piece of art from this elevation angle, I can see sky. Clouds are moving behind the Buddha's head. The only thing that remain static, is me and the Buddha.

We scout around this sacred place and found durian trees. Vincent found a durian on a tree and ask me to find out which tree. I looked for a while and got it. The first time I saw a durian on a tree grin emoticon

We climbed down from the place and greeted the monk. He was painting the decoration on the corner of the roof. Who knows monk could be one of the best architect in the world?

We asked Yee Pin to meet us at Tumpat but he cannot so we decided to meet at Kota Bharu Terminal. Yee Pin is here and yea before that we saw a few western backpackers. I check their backpack size for reference. Kebun Sultan for ais kacang second round. Vincent get himself Teik-Ann pills. Chicken Chop Pantai Timur for dinner! Nice chicken but the sauce was just so so. I am kinda picky but yeah honestly the sauce is just barely acceptable. Overall 8/10 marks given XP Vincent's no 1 girl in his list for Kelantan is here! She looks absolutely hot and attractive. Her red-hot-pants got my attention. Vincent checked out the girls in the photo on the wall and actually sketch her face in his journal. Boh Lat with him.

I pray to Buddha and hope our family are in good condition.

Day 6 - Kelantan, Malaysia

We took bus 9pm and reached at 5.30am. The bus is like a fridge. It was so freezing cold, even with my sleeping bag. Got down from the bus, it was windy. Since when Kota Bharu became so cold. We found McDonald's so we headed there to get clean up. I even spent a few minutes to get myself warm using the hand dryer. Yee Pin, my old best friend since I was a kid, come meet us at Kota Bharu Terminal with his new, white, shiny, 7 months old Honda Civic @.@ sweat! This is his car, owned at the age of 21, my age! We catch up a lil bit in his car, way back to Pasir Puteh, my hometown, the place I grow up. We were looking for places to eat but in this fasting month, every cafe shut down and even McDonald's, claimed themselves to provide 24/7 service also closed for the month at this hour. We cannot find any food so we continue head back to my hometown. This can only happen in Kelantan.

Yee Pin's house. We get our backpack settled and we went out for breakfast at Bukit Yong around 7am. Wan Tan Mee again =,= Pasir Puteh don't have anything to eat because of this fasting month. This Wan Tan Mee from Thai. Tasted normal. Yee Pin paid for the breakfast. We then got back to home and get some sleep while poor Yee Pin have to continue take care of his bicycle shop business. Big big business with the amount of *censored* sales per annum.

At noon we went to the capital, Kota Bharu. Pasir Puteh is almost 40km south from the capital. On the road I noticed Kelantan has been developed much more than i expected. The kampung is still the kampung, but with better roads and more shops. The trees are not that dense like in Kedah nor in Perlis.

At the same time, Yee Pin showed me some features of Honda Civic like wireless key system, anti-theft system, eco driving mode, leg-free driving system. Cool.

Forgot to mention about fried rice we taken at Yee Pin house by his mum. Fried rice + pineapple curry. Curry is delicious!

We went to USM Health Campus and USM Hospital, the place I was born 21 years ago. The hospital had been painted into pink. The last time I have seen them was still blue.

We take a quick explore in the campus and Vincent took some photos to show to our friends in Engineering and Main Campus. The size of the campus is almost the same as Main Campus, just that the land here is flat, with smaller gradient.

It was almost tea time, Vincent suggest we get something 'cold' (in Chinese it means food that can lower our body temperature) to drink. We found a herbal tea stall so Vincent and I go get Bitter Tea. RM3. Not really expensive if we were to compare with Penang's pricing but Yee Pin said it could be cheaper here in Kelantan. Oops, overpriced tea.

We then headed to a few restaurants and cafes that Yee Pin wanted to bring us for lunch, even though lunch hour was long passed. Chicken rice and chicken chop are both unavailable, so we drive to Kebun Sultan, where chinese food is all along the street like Raja Uda in Butterworth.

I looked for Khao Jam, a Thai's food, tasted like Nasi Kerabu. The only difference between Khao Jam and Nasi Kerabu is the colour of the rice. Khao Jam is green and Nasi Kerabu is blue.

Vincent and I get a pack for ourselves and we ate happily behind the ais kacang stall. Khao Jam is cheap. RM 2.50 each. Good food, very delicious. Yee Pin get 100g for dried pork (bak kua) for RM 8. WTF. Good to eat but the price GG.

We then went to Kota Bharu Mall, in short KB Mall. KB Mall is very funny, we can see shop shutting down at 7pm, which is the Buka Puasa hour. This can never happen in Penang's Mall. LOL even SenQ also shut down temporarily.

We then left back to Yee Pin's house. He told me it is hard to get food in Kelantan at fasting month. Islamic state, proven! So one tip if you want to explore Kelantan, avoid fasting season. Yee Pin's family took their dinner at 11pm. Very abnormal phenomena but they practiced this everyday. How awkward.

Yee Pin's family is really friendly and his sisters are both grown up and are adorable. But this does not turn me into a pedophile though!

Day 5 - Kangar, Perlis, Malaysia

No more breakfast from YR grandma! Haha. After packing YR grandparents bring us to Chan Ah Hai. We ordered a variety of food. Chicken Rice and Char Siu Rice. Wan Tan Mee. Lam Mee. Char Hor Fan.

Every food in this kopitiam is so niceee. The food have their own traditional and original taste, very delicious. We can see the old tiles on the floor and wall, old fans on the ceiling, vintage radio and television and last but not least, aged but warm people.

There is a poster hanging on the wall next to the television. Inspiring. Listening to old song on the radio and tasting Sunway Tea is just nice and relaxing.

YR's grandpa drives with adrenaline so V and I decided to nominate him into The Incredible List.
We said goodbye to YR and his family at Padang Besar Terminal. We took public bus to Perlis.

Yeah Perlis here I come!

The bus is also shaky like the previous one. I feel so happy that i smile all the way from Alor Setar to Kangar =D I am happy from the bottom of my heart. I have 3 big dreams to achieve in my life to obtain happiness. Freedom, Family and Love. At the age of 21, I can taste a sip of freedom at this very moment. I feel so awesome and so proud and happy at the same time.

On the way to Kangar, we can see rubber trees and oil palms, unlike Kedah, with paddy fields and fruit trees. We reach Kangar Terminal after a while and we are being directed to another bus stop at The Store for Maraliner for Gua Kelam. We are lost and here we met the first friendly girl, that showed us the route. Even though that is a wrong direction but still TQVM! We then walk a while and second friendly girl show us the landmark. Her friends and her told us The Store is very far away. V and I smiled. The Store is in our sight and not more than a kilometre away. We kept our luggage at The Store at RM2 per person. Vincent grabbed a few Delicia and I take out a few necessities out from our bag before we headed to bus stop.

On the bus, we talked to the conductor and asked for the time they will pick us up. Before we get down from the bus, third friendly girl told us not to play water at Gua Kelam because there are people infected by plague. So friendly.

Vincent and I paid RM1 each to reception and we moved on to the cave. Soooo amazing!

We walk on a hanging bridge 10 feet above the stream in the cave for around 400m. Due to Bernoulli Principle, the tunnel experience pressure change from one end to another. Therefore it is very cold and windy inside the cave.

I don't know what is the technical name for stuffs in the cave so let's call them big rocks and small rocks. We can see big rocks near and far. Some touchable and some even have water dripping from the ceiling. There are colourful spotlights shine on the big rocks. Violet, orange, yellow, green and red.

Vincent said there are minerals in water so I taste them with my tongue. Tasteless and odourless but the water is cold. The environment and temperature makes me feel like dinosaur is coming out >.<

We come out at the other end of the cave. There is a small garden named Secret Garden with big models of insects.

Vincent and I pass by and saw four Thai girls playing with their puppy. He asked me a few questions in Chinese manatau they response to us. Vincent tio-cheh-kia. We chat with the girls and took photo of them together with the white, fluffy and cute puppy in the sling bag. Sooo cute! Sooo adorable!

We then climb the stairs and found a secret tunnel that have no light inside.

As adventurous backpackers, Vincent and I decided to walk a few steps into the tunnel, even though the tunnel is strictly no access without a tour guide. Creepy.

On the way back to the cave entrance, again we take the hanging bridge again. We took video and sing songs in the cave. We saw baby bat sleeping upside down. We also saw a few western tourists.

Both my adrenaline and energy level down. We found a small hut and I take a nap with a scarf under my head.

We then walked to the bus stop after rest. Guess what, we found durian in a small convenient store. Aunty introduced us the durian, species named 101. Friendly aunty, which is considered the fourth friendly people we met for the day, open up the durian. V told me that 101 have the milky taste. I agree. He is also good at open up the durian. He have enough knowledge to be a durian expert. Good durian at good price. We washed our hands at the back of the store and said goodbye to the store owners, the aunty and her husband.

Maraliner bus is here. We chit chat with the same conductor again. They used tablet for ticketing >,<

After a few stops something crazy happened. A 11 years old indian boy got up on to the bus. He told us that his dad torture him and hit him with glass bottles. And also cut his hair which he then pointed our hair and compare his and ours. "Jangan gelak, i sakit hati oh," I can feel the pain but i can never understand it. He wanted to leave his old man behind and go to Penang to meet his friend or his married sister I am not sure because of his slang speaking. He told us he have 3 realistic goals to achieve. He want a car, a house and a good marriage. Very rare and almost impossible to hear this anymore even from our friends around. People are being too comfortable to dream and live life like how people should live. Credits to this young man, Desavan's dream. I observed him very carefully. He is very confident chatting with the bus driver and conductor even though his content is not well structured and he bragged a lot. He said he is strong enough to carry the bus and run. So the bus driver stop the bus and ask him to do so. Vincent and I can't stop laughing. Hahaha. But he somehow inspired me. What would we do if we are in his shoes? Do we have enough courage to take a risk to another states? At the age of 11? We reached our destination. I take a great look at his back, watching this amazing black young man left my sight. One day if this man able to keep himself alive, I want to see how far he had gone and how great he had become. God bless you, kid. BTW Desavan, you are in The Incredible List too!

We took our backpacks and had dinner somewhere near the Kangar Terminal. I consider Perlis is a place with a lot of human touch. I called it Ren Qing Wei in Chinese. People are friendly everywhere. Even though the food and drinks are not that awesome if i were to compare Perlis with Kedah.

I really do grow in one day! I <3 Perlis very much.

*Next Chapter: Kelantan!

Day 4 - Alor Setar, Kedah, Malaysia

I am the first one to fall asleep and the last one to wake up. Breakfast are prepared! Dried kuey teow. A bit sticky and hard to swallow. No offense grandma but we seldom take breakfast >,<

Grandpa and grandma waited for us because they wanted to bring us to SMJK Keat Hwa for canteen day but we do not know that. SORRRRRY... We insisted to walk. We went to Keat Hwa S, which is the wrong school. Yen Ruen was waiting at Keat Hwa K =,=

We then walk-walk and discovered a lot of nice stuff. Went through all kinds of terrains: grass, mud, tarmac, tiles, tunnel, bridge and highway. Tiring. We saw rivers, flowers and trees. KEDAH!

We accidentally come to the centre of attractions.

Monumen for 250 years. Awesome mosque across the road. Royal Museum. Clock tower in the middle of the road. Balai nobat, and art gallery. Too bad art galley and royal museum closing soon so we gotta speed reading the material in the museum. But I did digest a part of Kedah history. It has something to do with the Geroda (gigantic eagle), Vishnu, Raja Merong Mahawangsa and Roman ships. Not really clear what happen though =\

We gave up the idea to Keat Hwa K and walk to Alor Setar Mall instead. We did something stupid on the way. V and I were too hungry so we get longan on the tree. It is sweet but with less flesh. Too bad. After a long walk, V passed me a knife and challenge me to get a mango on the tree in front of a house. Challenge accepted. I looked left and right. No one around, so i grab the knife on my right hand and cut the attachment just the height of my head. I got a mango in my hand! But gosh the dogs start barking at me so I ran to V and we both left. Hahahahaha! We cannot stop laughing at each other. We pick a shade and sat down to peel the mango. The Malays just back from mosque and looked at us like we are aliens. Woops sorry my friends I forgot you guys are still puasa-ing. Sorry and no offense.

And here we are, reached Alor Setar Mall. The only mall with big sunlight in the centre of the mall =,=

We got ourselves lunch with Char Kuey Teow and Braised Chicken Feet with Mushoom Noodle. V also get himselves a ukulele at good price. YR then bring us to his friends, two super hot friends working at a car exhibition.

Fishing time! YR brought us to a paddy field and we started fishing straightaway right after we found a suitable place. The paddy field is muddy and the other side of the pathway is a big drain, which relatively almost the same as water volume as the one in paddy field. We saw bubbles but we find no fish =,= Sky got darker so we left the mosquito at the paddy field. We left empty handed but fulled with happiness and experience. FYI, i never fish before.

Noodles under the bridge. We waited for so long and when the noodle finally arrived, we got so quiet and disciplined eating because the famous noodle under the bridge is so delicious. And finally V remembered to take photos. The noodle tasted like Million Noodles in Raja Uda, Butterworth because of the handmade noodles and the awesome sauce. Char Siu is super best! They roasted that themselves with an oven.

Later on that night we captured Cups version of Happy Birthday to Celine. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Celine Lim Chai Lin!

I am writing this paragraphs with Vincent behind me making noise with his new toy, the ukulele - feeling ANNOYED =\

Day 3 - Alor Setar, Kedah, Malaysia

Today is the day we say goodbye to CY and his mum. He brought us to handmade Wan Tan Mee. Niceeee.

We took a shaky bus to Simpang Kuala. Hi Yen Ruen! YR waited at the bus stop with his MyVi. Dizzy after getting down from The Shaky.

The kuih here are very unique and delicious. There are Kuih Talam and all those soft kuih like usual and also special ones like fried green beans kuih and fried glutinous rice with coconut slices. I never expect fried glutinous rice to be so nice. Honestly the appearance and first impression is really not that good to me ~.~

Along the way we saw paddy field. It is like paddy field everywhere even in town area. So GREEN.

Paddy Museum charges RM5 per entry and we did not get in because of time factor. But YRdid show us photos. It. Is. So. Cool. A display in 360 degree like you are experiencing the actual life in a farm.

We then headed to Gua Keriang. We go into the homestay area but they are under renovation so we left. We circulated the cave just to check for the entrance. We managed to find the entrance no long. I got so excited staring at the words GUA GUNUNG KERIANG on the hill itself, hollywood-like-font.

We drove nearer to round around the cave, and guess what we found... Baby Goats! Oh man, goats with horn! Sweet holy brown horny goat.

This cave is meant to let people walk around but we are too naughty to drive with petrol. If you like nature you should get a pair of shoes and explore this thing with your own feet.

Town. Vincent suggest a really wild idea, that is to go fishing the next day. So here we are at a pet store! We get ourselves fishing equipment: wires, hooks, floats and baits. Yeah we have no pole but who cares anyway =P

We are at home for the evening. So happy I can finally get a peaceful and quiet nap. When i wake up, guess what, YR grandma had already finish preparing dinner! The dishes are nice and the taste are so rich. I can never cook this well! We ended the night with How I Met Your Mother.

Day 2 - Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia

We started the day at market. Wan Tan Mee for breakfast. Langsung tak kenyang.

There is a white hindu temple. Hee. The temple is very unique. I noticed that the statues are related to animals like snake, elephant and cows. Three-faced and wing-like-cupid statues. Vishnu.

Out of the temple, we discovered white hibiscus in residential area. The first time i saw white hibiscus with my eyes =D

Forgot to mention about the prison. There is a soccer field near the entrance. I wonder the people inside are allowed to play in this compound, that is so closed to the entrance. Kind of remember me of Prison Break. V name the prison, Resort Prison because the prison looks like a resort with nice wall lamps and walls, even with running water in front >_<

On the way back, we pass by another kampung area and discovered a lot of fruit trees. V taught me how to identify rambutan, cempedak, mango and durian trees. We had fun just by looking at the trees. I picked up a starfruit on the floor, peeled the outermost layer and eat. So sweeeet!

We stopped at kopitiam around the corner for Curry Noodle. RM3 for a really big portion. Yummy!

Fish with soy sauce, fried kat-na, fried tofu and taogua, chilli prawns and crystal raddish soup. We helped to prepare the dinner together. Thanks to Chin Yang's mum because Vincent and I really learnt a lot from her.

Day 1 - Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia

I left home at around 8 in the morning. Meet Vincent. Start journey.

Cinta Sayang Resort, a residential area with a golf coarse in the middle. Houses are incredibly beautiful. There are different styles of design like corporate, western, jungle, dai-yi-long, aerodynamic and even cinderella palace.

Took steamed chicken rice for lunch. Very traditional way of cooking. Like it very much.
Cendol in front of the shop is yummy, but it is way too sweet to me =S
Walked for really long hours around clock tower in the middle of the street and even check out MAST (Measat and Satellite Tower).

Jubilee Perak. Big park with deers. But V and I were too busy chatting until we forgot to check out the deer. Sitting on the bench under a big tree shade. Fresh. Our dinner are Original Cheesy Chicken Chop and Garlic Chicken Chop. RM 6.50 each.

After dinner, I got myself a nicer notepad to jot down backpacking stories. V started to draw in his pad. Hot Chick spotted!
